Dedicated Trees

Many trees have been donated to our Arboretum in recognition of a person, organization, or event. Click on the image below to learn more about these dedicated trees. If you are interested in contributing to our campus collection, please Email Us and include your name, contact information, and the reason for the dedication so that we may add the information to this page in the future.

Ratcliff Tree

A Crimson Sky hardy pomegranate is dedicated to Calliope “Poppy” Ratcliff, who was the Executive Secretary to the founding Dean of the School of Architecture.

Reinhart Tree

A kousa dogwood is dedicated to Bruce Lloyd Reinhart, a UMD Mathematics professor who taught at the university for nearly thirty years.

Reinke Tree

An ‘Appalachian Red’ eastern redbud on campus is dedicated to William “Butch” Reinke, the former Executive Director of Project Management at the University of Maryland Office of Information Technology (OIT).

Rojas-Bakr Tree

Carolina Rojas-Bahr was the former Assistant Director for Student Advancement in the Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education at UMD, where she worked for eight years.

Sands' tree

A red maple is dedicated to Dr. Doris Sands, a renowned sexuality educator at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Health within the Department of Behavioral and Community Health from 1964 to 1986.

Simons Tree

A native dogwood is dedicated to Landscape Services Donnell Simons, who passed away in 2019. It is located by the Shoemaker Building.

Slaughter Tree

A white oak is dedicated to Dr. John B. Slaughter, who was the first African-American chancellor of the University of Maryland (the position now known as President) and served from 1982 to 1988.

SGA Tree

The Student Government Association (SGA) has been a part of campus for 100 years. To commemorate this great accomplishment, it has decided to plant a tree in honor of its commitment to sustainability and helping students on this campus.

Sullivan Tree

Paul “Tuwe” Sullivan, member of the Arboretum staff, passed away in 2022 and a tree is planted near Chapel Field in his honor.

Tiller Tree

There is a tree on campus, at the Memorial Chapel's Garden of Reflection & Remembrance, dedicated to India Tiller, who was a former staff member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Studies office.
