Sweetbay Magnolia

The sweetbay magnolia is a late-blooming tree native to the southeastern Atlantic coast of the US. This tree features cup-shaped, fragrant white flowers that bloom in the spring and sometimes in summer, along with cone-shaped fruits with bright red seeds that mature in the fall, and dark green glossy leaves with silvery undersides. It grows best in moist, acidic soils but can tolerate the wet, heavy clay soils in pond areas or low areas in landscapes.
