Oakleaf hydrangea, or Hydrangea quercifolia, is a shrub native to the bluffs, woods, ravines, and stream banks of the southeastern US. This plant grows best in rich, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. In environments with harsh winters, these plants require mulching or burlap wraps in the winter season to prevent the loss of flower buds that would ruin the bloom of the coming spring. Its noteworthy characteristics include its conical clusters of white flowers which turn to a pinkish-purple color with age, and oak-like leaves that can also turn to purple shades in autumn.
