Mr. Luis Alfonzo, horticulturist at the University of Maryland, is the recipient of the 2017-2018 University Systems of Maryland Board of Regents Staff Award in the Category of Extraordinary Public Service to the University or the Greater Community – Exempt.

Luis is an exceptionally talented horticulturist and a great asset to the Buildings and Landscape Management department, Facilities Management, the University, and our College Park community. Since its inception in 2011, Luis has been one of the key contributors to Good Neighbor Day, a collaborative partnership between the University of Maryland, the City of College Park, and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). The event brings together the College Park community to beautify shared spaces, educate and engage in sustainable practices, and take pride in Greater College Park. This event has drawn more than 700 volunteers to give back to the community and Luis is a key leader in the planning and execution of this event.  Luis is also involved furthering professional development among landscapers and gardeners in the area by leading tours and workshops in Spanish on various aspects of our industry, such as at the recent Field Day at American University.

This award is the highest honor bestowed by the Board of Regents to recognize exemplary staff achievement. Luis' work and commitment bring honor to all of us who are part of the University System of Maryland. We are incredibly proud and appreciative of his dedication and exemplary service.
