Nocturn

Nocturn, a steel scultpure by late artist Andre Dunnell, sits atop a small rise to the southwest of the Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building. Andy received his MFA from the University of Maryland in 1991. He was a Professor and head of the sculpture program at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, where he taught from 1993 until his untimely death in January 2016. His family gave the sculpture, which had been previously exhibited in a large sculpture exhibition at the University of Maryland Art Gallery, to the UMD Art Department. The department worked with Taras Matla, Art Gallery Director, to bring it into the University collection. Professor W.C. Richardson, Chair of the Department of Art, writes of Andy, "Andy was one of the best graduate students our program has produced. We were sad that he left us so early, but we are proud to have such a dynamic sculpture on our grounds."
