South Campus Dining Hall Pollinator Garden
The South Campus Dining Hall Pollinator Gardens were added in the summer of 2025. Funded by Dining Services through a University of Maryland Sustainability Fund grant, the Arboretum & Botanical Gardens collaborated on plant selection and design and will care for the gardens.
There are five beds that were rejuvenated with native plants such as: purple cone flowers (Echinacea purpurea), purple knockout salvias (Salvia lyrata), st. john worts (Hypercium perforatum), thread leaf coreopsis’ (Coreopsis verticillata), dog woods (Cornus), nine bark (Physocarpus), american beauty berry (Callicarpa americana), little blue stem grass (Schizachyrium scoparium), yarrows (Achillea millefolium), penstemon, kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioicus), pachysandras (Pachysandra terminalis), rattle snake master (Eryngium yuccifolium), etc.
The University of Maryland was designated a Bee Campus USA in 2023 and a High Flyer Maryland Bird Campus in 2024 because of sustainable initiatives such as these, which support our mission of conservation and education on campus. We are grateful to Dining Services for their partnership on this and many other projects in our living campus.
