Arbor Day
Celebrated on the first Wednesday in April, Maryland Arbor Day holds a promise for the future in its celebration of trees.
First begun in the Unites States in 1872 in Nebraska, Arbor Day is traditionally celebrated across our state with planting a ceremonial tree, poster contests highlighting the importance of trees, and giveaway of tree seedlings. At the University of Maryland, we celebrate our state's Arbor Day rather than the national arbor day, which is held on the last Friday of April and thus falls immediately before Maryland Day. Students, friends, faculty, colleagues, and staff gather to add a tree to campus collection and to reflect on the history of the site.
