Southern Magnolia
The Southern Magnolia tree (Magnolia grandiflora) is a large, ovular, pyramidal tree that sprouts white, fragrant flowers with shiny, dark green leaves surrounding the flowers. This tree does not do well in cold winds but thrives in both full sun and partially shaded areas. It can reach up to 80 feet with a 40 feet spread with flowers reaching up to a foot in diameter! Most of the southern magnolia’s leaves remain on the tree year-round and it even produces a fruit that attracts squirrels and birds. You can find this tree near the Physics building here on campus.
