While the native Cercis canadensis is common here on campus, C. chinensis is a showier species of redbud, with a more upright structure of branches clothed in larger rosy purple-pink blooms early in March. The ‘Avondale’ was discovered in the Auckland, New Zealand town of Avondale. It is noted for producing a profuse bloom of dark rose-purple flowers which cover the branches in early spring and the heart-shaped glossy green leaves turn yellow in fall. On campus, these can be found in between LeFrak and Shoemaker Halls.
