It’s a typically stressful workday careening toward the semester’s end, and I am spending part of it sprawled on my belly in the woods, watching skittering ants and little white mushrooms growing on decaying sticks.

Mission
History
The University of Maryland College Park began as an agricultural college in 1856, and with the Morrill Act, became a Land Grant institution in 1862. In the 150 plus years since, the campus has expanded to 1250 acres, a spacious setting for the trees, shrubs, and flowers that now make up the UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

The UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden
Our entire College Park campus is a convenient and easily accessible arboretum. What is an arboretum? It is a collection of trees and plants maintained for scientific and educational study and public enjoyment.
The arboretum is a unit of Facilities Management and provides an avenue for the critical care of environmental and sustainable landscapes at a world-class institution of higher learning and cutting-edge research.
