A little—or a lot of—wind didn’t stop an estimated 86,000-plus people from enjoying a day of learning and discovery at Saturday’s Maryland Day, the 21st annual celebration of all things UMD.
Under a nearly cloudless sky, guests watched scientific demonstrations, played trivia games, took in theater and music performances, ate carnival food served from flapping white tents, and filled their bags with balloon animals and free plants grown in the campus greenhouse.
Among the nearly 400 events, booths and activities, Dining Services gave away copies of its new immigration-themed cookbook. The Insect Petting Zoo had a never-ending line, and the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering held its dedication and welcomed visitors inside.
For the first time since 2011, the Spring Football Game returned to Maryland Day, and fans got their first peek at new Head Coach Michael Locksley’s plans for the team.
