State Employee Day of Service with the Arboretum!

DTS LogoDid you know that not only is our entire campus a world-renowned arboretum, but that you can also perform your Day of Service with us? On September 11, 2020, Governor Hogan announced that all state employees would be granted administrative leave in order to volunteer. If you’ve been missing campus and your colleagues, we encourage you to consider volunteering with us here in our beautiful gardens and help cultivate our living campus.

Since the designation of our campus landscape as the UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden in 2008, we have been named a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for twelve consecutive years. In 2019, we became a Level IV ArbNet Accredited Arboretum by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum, for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens.

Our managed landscapes include gardens such as the Garden of Reflection & Remembrance, but also our stormwater management areas, rain gardens, and tree canopies. We rely on the generous donation of thousands of hours of volunteer time each year and we look forward to welcoming you and your team as a volunteer as well. Individuals can help care for the H. Edward Reiley Garden, next to the Arboretum Outreach Center, 3931 Stadium Drive, on Wednesday, October 14, Wednesday, October 21, and Wednesday, October 28 from 9:30am - 11am. Groups can schedule a time that works for them by contacting our Outreach Coordinator below.  All activities will take place outside, are limited to 10 people in one area, and involve physical activity. All participants must follow University of Maryland COVID-19 protocols. To schedule a volunteer session between now and October 31, please email Outreach Coordinator Meg Smolinski at msmolins@umd.edu
