J. Landon Reeve IV Reading Garden
The J. Landon Reeve IV Reading Garden provides a quiet respite on the south side of the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. This garden is named in honor of the founder of Chapel Valley Landscape Company and University alumnus, J. Landon Reeve IV. During high school, Mr. Reeve worked at a local nursery and later obtained his B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from the University of Maryland in 1963. Chapel Valley worked on notable projects such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; the Baltimore Inner Harbor; the National Shrine; Marriott Corporation; and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This garden, located on the south side of the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center, runs on an east-west axis parallel to Fieldhouse Drive and near Jones-Hill House. Visitors benefit from the morning shade and benches to rest and reflect. Plants include dwarf inkberry (Ilex glabra 'Ilexfarrowtracey' USPP#30,147 STRONGBOX inkberry) for winter structure, hybrid fothergilla (Fothergilla x intermedia 'NCFI1' PP#34,139 LEGEND OF THE SMALL) for spring flowers and fall color, Hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel', native green and gold (Chrysogonum virginianum 'Pierre') and black-eyed susans (Rudbeckia fulgida 'Blovi' Viette's Little Suzy) for summer and fall highlights in vibrant Maryland colors. The garden is a fitting tribute to what Mr. Reeve learned at the University and incorporated into his company.
