Sundial

Sundial on McKeldin Mall

Sitting in the middle of the large open area on the McKeldin Mall and between the McKeldin Library and Omicron Delta Kappa Fountain is the University of Maryland’s sundial. The sundial, which is in a location that the campus community walks by daily, has been a part of UMD’s campus since 1966. The sundial was given as a donation from the University’s graduating class of 1965, the Physics and Astronomy Departments, as well as those who knew Professor Uco Van Wijk, a former professor at the University who helped to form the astronomy departments on campus. The sundial was restored in 2004 and will continue to be a well-known monument on campus that community members will continue to pass for years to come.
